Lot 276:
Attributed to Lebrecht Wilhelm Schulz (Meiningen, 1774–1864), Carved Staghorn and Wood Hunting Box
Description
A finely worked small German hunting box, attributed to Lebrecht Wilhelm Schulz of Meiningen, constructed in dark-stained wood and inlaid with carved staghorn plaques depicting hunters, hounds, a stag, and a central campfire within a woodland setting. The object reflects the courtly German tradition of the Kunstdrechsler and carver, where stag horn and other luxury materials were used to create highly detailed sporting objects for display as much as use. The dense narrative relief, hunting iconography, and combination of pale horn against dark ground align well with the decorative arts associated with Meiningen workshops in the first half of the 19th century.
