Description
A finely executed Japanese Edo period kodansu (personal storage cabinet), distinguished by its striking painted checkerboard and lacquered figural landscape panels. The rectangular cabinet is fitted with multiple drawers and hinged doors, revealing a fully compartmentalized interior typical of traveling or personal chests of the period.
The exterior is richly decorated with alternating painted squares, creating a dramatic geometric ground. The front panels feature stylized landscapes, including architectural elements, foliage, and symbolic motifs rendered in subdued tones with gilt highlights. The asymmetrical compositions and poetic restraint reflect traditional Japanese aesthetic principles of the Edo period.
Fitted with engraved metal mounts, corner brackets, and traditional pulls, the cabinet retains a strong visual presence despite evident age and wear.
