Scenes inspired by The Tale of Genji were a popular subject in Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking. Artists of the Utagawa school frequently depicted aristocratic interiors and literary themes featuring elaborately dressed figures in refined domestic settings. The present composition follows this tradition and bears a signature cartouche reading “Toyokuni ga, ” indicating authorship in the manner of Utagawa Toyokuni.
