Fossilized Skull of an Extinct Early Horse, Mesohippus Bairdi. Measuring 7 inches L.
Mesohippus lived during the Oligocene epoch, approximately 30-40 million years ago.
It was a small, dog-sized creature, standing about 24 inches (60 cm) at the shoulders.
Unlike modern horses that graze on tough grasses, Mesohippus was a forest dweller that browsed on soft leaves.
Fossil remains are commonly found in locations like the Badlands of South Dakota.
