Description

Antique French Louis XVI style two-tier occasional table in the manner of Galle, executed in rosewood with finely inlaid marquetry decoration. The rectangular top and lower shelf are both adorned with naturalistic floral and foliate motifs, rendered in contrasting veneers to create depth and tonal variation.
The table is raised on elegantly curved cabriole legs with shaped supports, joined by a lower tier shelf, and fitted with metal side handles. The composition reflects the influence of the Art Nouveau period while maintaining classical Louis XVI proportions, typical of furniture produced in France at the turn of the 20th century.

Catalogue Note
Emile Galle (1846-1904), a leading figure of the French Art Nouveau movement, popularized the use of intricate marquetry depicting botanical themes. By the turn of the 20th century, Galle’s aesthetic strongly influenced French decorative arts, inspiring a range of furniture that combined classical forms with fluid, nature-based ornament.
