Description

Monumental antique Italian majolica ewer in polychrome tin-glazed earthenware, executed in the Renaissance Revival style with elaborate sculptural modeling and hand-painted figural decoration.

The baluster-form body is richly adorned with high-relief grotesque mascaron heads, scrolling acanthus ornament, and framed oval cartouches depicting narrative coastal scenes. The vibrant palette of cobalt blue, emerald green, ochre, and cream enhances the theatrical Baroque-inspired composition. The neck rises to a dramatic scrolled handle terminating in an applied putto figure, further emphasizing the sculptural presence of the piece.
The interior of the underside bears a hand-painted underglaze mark.
Height: 29 inches
Width: approximately 10 inches
Restoration to base at stem (reglued), restoration to lip of ewer as shown.
