Italian School Pieta with Angels, 17th-18th c. Oil on Canvas Laid to Board
Description
A devotional oil on canvas depicting the Pieta, with the Virgin Mary mourning the lifeless body of Christ, assisted by a winged angel, while two cherub heads emerge from clouds above. Christ reclines across a white shroud, his body delicately modeled in cool tonal gradations. The Virgin, dressed in a deep ultramarine mantle over a red garment, clasps her hands in restrained sorrow, while an angel in rose and cream drapery supports Christ’s upper body.
The canvas has been relined and laid down to board. Presented in a later gilt frame.
