Catalogue Note
This dramatic composition exemplifies the theatrical intensity and painterly confidence of the late 17th-century Italian Baroque. Christ is shown collapsing under the weight of the Cross, his suffering emphasized through dynamic gesture and sharply contrasted light, while Simon of Cyrene—muscularly modeled and powerfully posed-steps forward to assist him. Surrounding figures, including Roman soldiers and attendants, heighten the narrative tension through animated movement and expressive faces.
The painting’s compositional structure-marked by strong diagonals, sweeping drapery, and vigorous figural interaction-closely aligns with the visual vocabulary associated with Luca Giordano and his extensive Neapolitan-Venetian circle. Particularly characteristic are the warm, glowing palette, the fluid handling of paint, and the dramatic staging of secondary figures, including the elder figure in a red cap, a motif frequently encountered in Giordanesque Passion scenes.
