Cobbler’s Shoeshine Box (Converted Butter Crate)
Description
An early 20th-century Canadian cobbler’s shoeshine box, constructed from a reused wooden butter trade crate stenciled CANADIAN BUTTER / ONTARIO. The box has been adapted with a fitted lid surmounted by an iron footrest, interior compartments for brushes and polish, and retains associated cobbler’s tools including wooden shoe lasts and a screw-operated shoe stretcher. The interior shows evidence of prolonged use consistent with professional or itinerant shoeshine practice. Approx. 20 in. (50.8 cm) high
