Edo Period Japanese Samurai Kabuto Helmet and Hanpo Kaga
Description
Edo period (1603-1868) Japanese samurai kabuto and hanpo from the province of Kaga in Japan. The Kaga domain’s assessed rice yield exceeded one million koku, making it Japan’s wealthiest outside shogounal lands. Accordingly, the samurai’s and Daimyo’s were the wealthiest of all Japan, and they wanted to show their wealth in every piece of armor they wore. They had the best armorer’s that specializes in the highest grade work. This kabuto is an all iron superb high-sided Goshozan suji bashi. Helmets of this type are higher at the back than the front and have the rivets countersunk under the lacquer. The lower part, the Shikoro, is also all iron. The hanpo is also all iron and perfectly matched with the same pattern and lacquer, but in different colors, a Kaga tradition. Brass maedate (front helmet decoration) representing a boar eye. The set in in superb condition, inside lining also. Only a loss of lacquer on top visor, please see pictures. Circa Mid-Edo period, 1750-80. The red stand is not included. Helmet measures 13 x 12 x 10 inches H, hanpo measures 7 inches W x 8.5 H.
