Description

Antique Muromachi period (1336-1573) short weapon that makes its appearance in the Nambokucho period(1333-1392). The Uchine took the form of a very short spear, with a shaft that was only a foot long and a small but heavy three or four sided blade. At close quarters it could be used for stabbing or thrown in the manner of a dart, while for longer range it could be held by the point and thrown in a similar way to a knife. This one has a 4 inches long, three sided blade yari, and it was made to look like a Yumi (arrow), covered with Japanese lacquer and decorated with a carved nock, and a red lacquered yari saya (scabbard – scabbard has crack, loose fitting). It has a very nice old patina. Circa end of Muromachi period, 1550-75.
