Description

In the form of bookends, one modelled as a peasant woman, carrying a basket, the other a farmer, holding a scythe; each affixed to a stand, with impressed seals Udagawa Kazuo. Both with carved hands and faces. THIS LOT CANNOT BE EXPORTED FROM CANADA. 
Measuring 8 inches H x 4.5 W x 4 deep.
Udagawa Kazuo (born Udagawa Sutejiro) was a prominent Japanese bronze sculptor of the Meiji period, known for his refined craftsmanship and realistic portrayal of everyday life.
Career and Name Change: He was born as Udagawa Sutejiro and used this name until 1906 (Meiji 39), when he adopted the art name Udagawa Kazuo.
Professional Affiliation: He was a member of the Tokyo Chokokai (Tokyo Sculptors’ Society) and is considered an artist of the "second generation" of the Tokyo School of bronze casting.
Exhibitions: Kazuo frequently showcased his work at both domestic and international exhibitions:
Domestic: He exhibited at the Third (1890) and Fifth (1903) National Industrial Exhibitions (Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai).
International: His work received awards at major world’s fairs, including the 1900 Paris Exposition, the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair (Louisiana Purchase Exhibition), and the 1910 Japan-British Exhibition in London.
