Description

Finely carved and polychromed wood figure of Shakyamuni Buddha, seated in dhyana asana (the meditative lotus position) with hands resting in dhyana mudra, symbolizing inner balance and enlightenment. The Buddha’s serene expression is rendered with downcast eyes, a gentle smile, and a broad oval face framed by tightly coiled curls.
Wearing a monastic robe draped over both shoulders, painted in muted tones of red, ochre, and green, the sculpture retains traces of its original mineral pigments and gilding beneath a naturally aged surface. The reverse shows a hollowed consecration cavity, typical of devotional figures made for temple use, once containing sacred deposits such as sutras or relic fragments.
The surface exhibits a fine, even craquelure pattern consistent with aged lacquered wood, and soft abrasion to the high points from ritual handling, lending the work an appealing, devotional patina. The carving’s simplified yet harmonious proportions, stylized robe folds, and compact form are characteristic of northern Chinese Buddhist wood sculpture from the late Qing to early Republican era.

Medium: Carved and polychromed wood with traces of gilding; hollowed at the back for consecration.

Dimensions: Height: 8.6 in (22 cm)

Condition: Surface wear, craquelure, and minor pigment losses consistent with age.
Old repairs at robe folds and minor flaking at extremities; structurally stable.
Evidence of original consecration cavity at rear.
