Lot 409:
Papua New Guinea, Sepik River Region, Ritual Ancestor Head, early 20th c.
Description
A striking carved wooden ancestral or spirit head, adorned with organic materials including feathers, plant fibers, and traces of pigment. The figure exhibits the classic Sepik aesthetic vocabulary — an elongated skull form with deep circular eye sockets, a pronounced beak-like nose ridge, and an open mouth inset with wooden or shell teeth, giving the visage an otherworldly, almost skeletal intensity.
The sculpture’s heavily encrusted surface, weathered patina, and ritual accretions indicate extensive ceremonial use and long handling. Around the base, remnants of bird feathers and natural fibers are bound into the figure — materials symbolically linking the spirit world and the living. The top of the cranium shows age cracks and pigment loss, consistent with examples collected in situ.
This type of figure was likely used in initiation or funerary rituals, representing an ancestral presence or protective spirit (Tambaran) invoked through chants and offerings. Such effigies were often housed in men’s ceremonial houses (Haus Tambaran) and activated through the inclusion of organic matter, blood, or feathers from totemic species.
