Tribal Bamboo Pipe with Carved Bearded Head, Sepik River Region, Papua New Guinea, mid-20th Century
Description
A tall bamboo tobacco pipe intricately carved with a male head at the base, featuring almond-shaped eyes, a strong nose, and a deeply incised mouth. The beard, moustache, and eyebrows are made from vegetal fiber, a hallmark of Sepik River artistry where organic materials are used to emphasize facial hair and ornamentation. A smaller bamboo side bowl is attached with plant fiber lashing and sealed with resin, showing darkened traces of use.
Origin: Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea, most likely Iatamul Tribe
Date: Mid-20th century

Condition: Age-consistent wear; surface patina and smoke darkening; minor fissures and losses to fiber elements. Structurally sound and complete.
