Description

Portuguese Silver Lidded Ewer – R. and Irmaos, Porto (1st Standard Silver), c. 1880-1900

Height: 10.5 in (26.5 cm), 1462 grams total weight.

A richly decorated late-19th-century Portuguese solid silver covered ewer, superbly chased in high relief with grapevines, leaves and clustered fruit, the body combining smooth polished surfaces with ornate repoussé bands. The domed lid is modeled with scrolling foliage and grape motifs, topped by a sculptural grape cluster finial. The naturalistic vine-form handle is heavily cast and beautifully detailed.

Marks:

– “1o Titulo” (Portuguese 1st standard silver, .916 fineness)

– Porto city hallmark (boar’s head within a shield, 1887-1938 period)

– Maker: R. & Irmaos, Porto (rare provincial silversmiths active late 19th / early 20th century)

A substantial and decorative piece of high-grade Portuguese silverwork, showing exceptional hand chasing in the traditional Douro grape-harvest style associated with Porto’s silversmithing heritage.

Condition: Light surface wear and small dents consistent with age; overall very good antique condition with strong detail.
