Lot 144:
Michel Souillard Brutalist Owl Sculpture in Forged Copper, Brass & Iron, France, 1970s
Description
Michel Souillard (French, mid-20th century)
Forged and Welded Metal Owl Sculpture
Height: 12 in (30 cm)
A striking hand-forged mixed-metal sculpture of an owl perched on a naturalistic branch, executed in copper, brass, and iron. The body is crafted from hammered and welded copper sheet with brass highlights, accented by deeply set tubular eyes and stylized feather texturing. The forged iron branch base provides both balance and a Brutalist, organic quality.
Signed Michel Souillard on the body. Souillard is known for his mid-century decorative metalwork, often depicting owls and birds with a modernist, Brutalist aesthetic, akin to the work of Curtis Jere and François Melin.
