Lot 14:
Franz Lau (German, 1889-1970) “Woman Before a Mirror” Oil painting on Canvas
Description
Franz Lau (German, 1889 – 1970)
Woman Before a Mirror, ca. 1950 – 1960
Oil on canvas, the original canvas later trimmed and float-mounted within a giltwood frame with linen liner.
A serene interior study of a woman before her reflection, rendered in restrained tonal harmonies of rose, ivory, and sage. Lau’s sensitive treatment of light and introspective composition exemplify the refined realism of the post-war Dresden-Munich school. The soft brushwork and muted palette emphasize mood and atmosphere over detail, characteristic of Lau’s mature style.
Signed lower right Franz Lau.
Dimensions: 14 x 10.5 inches framed to ________
Condition: Canvas trimmed at edges and float-mounted; light surface wear; otherwise very good presentation.
Franz Lau was a Dresden-trained painter associated with the New Objectivity movement, known for contemplative portraits and domestic interiors painted in a restrained, modern realist idiom. His post-war works capture a quiet psychological depth and are increasingly recognized for their balance of classical draftsmanship and subdued modernist sensibility. This painting is an elegant example of Lau’s intimate figural compositions from his mature period.
