R. Turnbull (British, mid-19th C.), Romantic / Barbizon Painting
Description
R. Turnbull (British, mid-19th Century)
“Wooded Landscape at Dusk, ” 1841
Oil on canvas laid down on panel, 26 × 21½ in (canvas); 35 × 30 in (framed)
A Romantic woodland landscape depicting a golden sunset filtering through trees beside a reflective pool. The soft atmospheric handling, warm tonality, and interplay of shadow and light situate this work within the British Romantic and Barbizon traditions, showing strong affinities with painters such as Théodore Rousseau, Narcisse Diaz de la Peña, John Constable, and George Vicat Cole. The canvas has been laid down on panel, a common 19th-century conservation practice, and retains its period gilt frame.
Signed R. Turnbull, lower area; dated 1841 on presentation plaque.
Condition: Craquelure and darkened varnish; minor abrasions; structurally stable.
Frame: Ornate carved-and-gilded 19th-century frame with foliate and fruit motifs.
Provenance: Private collection, Quebec.
A fine example of Romantic-era landscape painting, merging British pastoral sensibility with the tonal naturalism of the French Barbizon school. The painting’s glowing light and meditative atmosphere evoke the poetic landscapes of mid-century Europe.
