John Young Johnstone (1887-1930) was a Canadian Impressionist painter known for his landscapes, cityscapes, and genre paintings, particularly his observations of life in Quebec and scenes of Montreal’s Chinatown. His work is characterized by a simplified realism with Impressionist influences, and his later work often employed a toned-down palette with a sense of melancholy. He was a member of the Beaver Hall Group and the Pen and Pencil Club of Montreal.
