He was a member of the Automatistes, a group of Quebec artists who signed the Refus global manifesto in 1948, which called for a rejection of figuration in favor of spontaneous and instinctive creative acts. Riopelle’s style is characterized by free experimentation and intuitive exploration, using various techniques throughout his career, including his distinctive mosaic technique with thick impasto brushstrokes.
