Description

Carlo Scarpa for Venini, Pennellate Bottle, Model 3664, Murano, c. 1942-late 1940s

Superb and rare example of the iconic Pennellate bottle form designed by Italian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa for the renowned Venetian glass-firm Venini. Executed on the Island of Murano in the early 1940s, this bottle (model 3664) masterfully demonstrates the technique for which Scarpa is celebrated: the application of hot opaque coloured glass to a clear blown vessel, then a subtle twist of the molten mass to create sweeping, painterly brush-strokes in glass.

Standing approximately 32-33 cm (12 5⁄8-13 in) high, the vessel features vibrant red and amber ribbons which spiral around the cylindrical body and up into the slender neck, affording a dynamic sense of movement and rhythm. The glass is crystal-clear, allowing the decorative bands to interact beautifully with light and reflection, enhancing depth and transparency. Under the base the original acid-etched signature reads “VENINI MURANO” (two-line), a hallmark of Scarpa’s early production period at Venini.

This piece is published in the authoritative Venini catalogue raisonné covering 1921–1986 (Venini Archive) and is illustrated in scholarship on Scarpa’s work for Venini, including Carlo Scarpa: I Vetri di Murano by Barovier and the 2012 exhibition catalogue Carlo Scarpa. Venini 1932-1947.

Excellent overall condition. The body and neck exhibit no visible chips, cracks or restoration under magnification.

The rim and ground foot show expected minimal wear consistent with age but no heavy abrasion or damage.

Provenance: Private Collection, Dolo, Venice, Italy. Acquired locally, retained in the Veneto region since.
