Nine Minton Arts and Crafts Period Encaustic Ceramic Tiles, England Circa 1875
Description
A group of nine Minton Arts and Crafts period encaustic ceramic tiles decorated with geometric motifs in a striking palette of royal blue, tan, white and terracotta, one tile being of a slightly different pattern which could be used to centre the remaining eight. All bearing impressed factory marks on the reverse, MINTON and CO. PATENT. STOKE UPON TRENT. The encaustic method is a lengthy process that first involves moulding each tile with a handmade pattern, then filling in each individual segment of the pattern by hand with coloured liquid clay (slip), after which each is then allowed to dry before being fired in a kiln for approximately 24 hours. 6 inches x 6.
