Antique Flemish Ebonized Ripple Frame with Marquetry Panels

A fine 19th-century Flemish ripple-moulded frame, richly ebonized and featuring alternating sections of basketweave ripple carving and inlaid satinwood panels with delicate foliate marquetry. Frames of this type derive from 17th-century Flemish and Dutch prototypes, prized for their bold architectural profiles and optical depth that emphasized chiaroscuro in Old Master paintings.
Condition: Good overall; light rubbing and age wear consistent with use.Provenance: Castello Ferrari, Pieve del Cairo (Lomellina). Castello Ferrari is traditionally associated with Napoleon’s stay during the negotiations preceding the Treaty of Milan (1796).
