Vallauris Pottery Lidded Tureen Francois-Xavier Lalanne (attrib)
A vintage Vallauris pottery lidded tureen featuring a fish-shaped handle on the lid, crab-shaped handles on the sides and a creamy-yellow glaze. The tureen is from the mid-20th century and is signed on the base “Ceramique Vallauris” and a partial stamp which seems to refer to “Lalanne”. It is designed for serving ‘bouillabaisse’, a traditional Provencal fish stew. Francois-Xavier Lalanne and his wife Claude were known for their whimsical and animal-inspired designs. The tureen features a fish-shaped handle on the lid, characteristic of Lalanne’s style. It is known that the Lalanne couple collaborated many times with the ceramists of the Vallauris region and designed many pieces in their workshop for creation. It is noted that the fish bears a resemblance to the monumental Carp sculptures Lalanne would produce in his later years and to the fish depicted in his drawing “Le Retour D’Ulysse”. Approximately 32 x 32 cm. Provenance: A collector in Rethel, France. 13 inches H x 13 W.
