Antique painting of Emperor Hanazono of Japan (1297-1348), in the Nise-e style, likely by Goshin Fujiwara during the Kamakura period. Nise-e is a Japanese portraiture style focused on capturing the subject’s character with simple lines. The inscription includes the name Sosei likely referencing the poet Priest Sosei. This portrait is a notable example of Nise-e and represents a shift towards secular portraiture in Japanese art.??The artwork measures 25 x 34 cm and had been affixed to paper due to its fragility. Full backing is 27 x 36 cm. Overall crackling, and extremely fragile throughout.
