Lot 137:
Japanese Antique Samurai Long Katana Sword
This antique very long sword is 70.4 cm or 27.7 inches and mumei, or unsigned, and comes with a white sheath or Shirasaya, to store the blade properly while putting the wooden sword in place in the koshirae, just like Japanese collectors do. Judging by the characteristics of the blade, the swordsmith seems to be from the Shin-shinto, (New-New Swords), made probably in the late Edo period (around 1800s). The Hamon, or temper line, is Ko-Midare, and beautiful. The Jihada, or forging grain, is Mokume-Hada. The blade’s condition is very good with old polish and tiny scratches due to in and out from the scabbard. The tsuka or handle shows a dark green Tsukaito or wrapping in excellent condition. The Menuki is karajishi (lion). The Fuchi shows gold-painted bamboo and tiger. The Kashira is iron, gold and copper with Yamamichi and Kiku. (Mountain trail and Chrysanthemum) the Tsuba is also beautiful with Kamon (family crest) and Kuyo-Mon design. The Saya, or scabbard, is Ishimeji-Nuri in red lacquer, and quite remarkable. Overall katana length is close to 40 inches or 101.6 cm. Circa 1800. No signature, no papers, but a very fine Japanese antique samurai katana. No rack included.
