End of Edo era samurai’s child armour, with hitsu (armour box). The armour is made out of paper, brass, silk, luxurious fabrics. Replicas of the full sized versions, these miniature suits were made for the Tango no Sekku, an annual ceremony held at the Japanese imperial court on may 5th, to ward off evil spirits for samurai boys. The lacing of this armor, in kebiki fashion, is remarkable, so is the opulent daimyo’s very high grade kabuto and the expressive menpo (face mask). Hitsu measures 15 inches H x 11 deep x 15 W.
