Lot 106:
Antique Japanese Samurai Katana Nihonto
Superb and original Shinshinto katana, circa 1800, featuring high quality work on the saya (scabbard). The blade is in excellent condition, definitely a beefy one, heavy, with a thickness of 0.8-0.9 cm, and a length of 27.5 cm (70cm). The blade features a well-grained and tight ko-itame hada. The hamon is a koto-style chu-suguha that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a round maru boshi. The tang is mumei, or unsigned, and ubu, or unshortened. The samurai mountings, or koshirae, is in excellent condition also. The tsuka features a light brown silk ito, custom menuki, and a dragonfly kashira. The tsuba is a nice iron one. The saya, or scabbard, is lacquered brown with a textured finish. The saya displays a high quality nature scene that is painted in lacquer. Based on the length or the blade, workmanship, shape, and patina of the rust on the tang, the sword was likely made in the 1800s, making it a Shinshinto. It is possible it was made by a swordsmith from the Hizen Tadayoshi School which was known for making swords in this style. Circa 1800.
