Italian Marble Bust Dantes Love Beatrice Vichi
Antique Italian large finely hand carved marble bust of a female, most likely representing Beatrice, the 13th century lady who inspired the Florentine poet, Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321); Beatrice, whose real name was Bice di Folco Portinari (1266 – 1290), was the mythical love of Dantes life, and he immortalized her as his guide through paradise in the last book of The Divine Comedy; set on a formed low marble base, unsigned but possibly from Ferdinando Vichi (1875 – 1945). Base has been repaired. Bust measures 16 W x 11 deep x 17 inches H, base measures 18 x 8 x 1.5 inches H.
