Japanese Ceramic Tea bowl with Tomoe Gozen
Japanese Ceramic Tea bowl with Tomoe Gozen. Bowl is stamped on foot, measures 4.25 W x 3.25 inches H, box measures 4.75 inches H x 5.25 x 5.25. Tomoe Gozen (1157–1247) was a Japanese female samurai who lived in late 12th century, or late Heian, period Japan. She was known for her skill in archery and swordsmanship. The Tale of Heike, a chronicle of the Genpei War, describes her as particularly beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkable archer, and very good with a sabre. Tomoe Gozen has since become an almost mythical figure in Japanese history and is ever present in popular culture in Japan.
