Impressive high grade Edo Period Japanese Samurai armour with a heavy 62 plates Ken-Suji kabuto signed by famous armorer Neo Masanobu. This armorer was active in the early Edo era (1600-1650) and is in excellent condition. The cuirass is called Haramaki dou. Inspired by the old Kamakura Haramaki armours, these type of Haramaki dou made at the early Edo era have an opening in their back, which is closed with a piece called Sei Ita, a plate covering the opening of the Haramaki, as shown. The cuirass is all iron and silk, and a mixture of both Iyozane and Honkozane lacing. The big shoulders guards are called O Sode Yoroi, and were made to protect from enemy arrows. The red menpo face guard, unsigned, is exceptional with its painted moustache and beard. A thick peach shaped brass maedate decorates the helmet. The gold painted Kote, or sleeves, are made of thick iron, hinges and the hands shows a mon identical to those on front of the cuirass. the gold painted Haidate, or thigh protectors, are very impressive, and the gold painted suneate or lower-leg protectors are made of thick iron plates also. The armour is seated on a very old pine box, a presentation box that is included in the lot. Box measures 24 inches W x 18 deep x 20 H, suit sits 60 inches H including box.
