Japanese WW2 Officer Type 98 Shin Gunto Katana
Original Japanese army officer’s sword in Shin Gunto mountings from World War II. The blade and the mountings are in excellent condition. The 26 inches blade (66cm) has a Hamon (temper line) that is present the length of the blade ending in a maru boshi. The tang is signed Kanemune and dated Showa Ni Jyu Nen Go Gatsu, or May 1945. It is rare to find war-era sword with date as late as May 1945. The tsuka, or handle, is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. The wrapping is tight without fraying. The tsuba, or guard, is the classic WW2 design. The saya or scabbard is wood black lacquered and in excellent condition. Circa 1945. No sword rack included.
