Chinese Summer Gauze Embroidered Jifu Dragon Robe
Description
THE SIMON CHANG COLLECTION – A Chinese men’s summer jifu dragon robe or garment, probably to be worn by a court official during the Qing dynasty, the robe made of a gauze fabric intricately woven in satin stitch in shades of blues, white, red and purple with metallic gold threading on the front and back, showing eight four-clawed dragons pursuing flaming pearls interspersed with clusters of lingzhi-shaped clouds with bats and auspicious or precious objects, set on a blue ground above crashing waves, and with ruyi-shaped clouds and a lishui stripe done in a kesi weave at the hem and the start of the sleeves, with striped sleeve extension, the collar and matixiu (horse hoof) shaped cuffs decorated with further complimentary dragons, clouds and symbols done in similar colored and gold threading and with a gold edging, 19th century.
