Lot 43:
Japanese Meiji Okimono Statue of a Graceful Young Woman Bijin
Description
Japanese okimono from the Meiji period (1868-1912) depicting a woman holding a parasol. Such figures, known as bijin or geisha, were popular decorative carvings during this era. The figure is beautifully carved wearing a traditional flowing kimono secured with an obi. She is depicted standing on a rustic, naturalistic base while wearing geta sandals. In one hand, she holds an intricately detailed open parasol, and in the other, a delicate floral arrangement. Signed red lacquer and gold tag on underside, restoration to parasol handle in several places.
