John A. Hammond, RCA, OSA (Canadian, 1843-1939) Oil on board depicting sailing vessels at rest in a tranquil harbor enveloped by a luminous golden haze. Executed in Hammond’s characteristic atmospheric style, the composition demonstrates the artist’s mastery of light, mood, and maritime subjects. Signed lower right. Presented in an ornate period giltwood and gesso frame.

John Astley Hammond was a prominent Canadian painter, photographer, and educator, serving as head of the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison Ladies’ College and director of the Owens Art Gallery. Renowned for his atmospheric marine and landscape scenes, Hammond drew inspiration from European Barbizon and Hague School traditions, producing evocative views of the Bay of Fundy, Saint John Harbour, and coastal Europe.
