Alexandre S. Giffard (Quebec, 1841-1880) Oil on panel portrait of a Quebec habitant, signed lower right Gif, depicting a pipe-smoking figure in a red tuque and winter coat. Executed in the manner of Cornelius Krieghoff and reflecting the artist’s enduring influence on Canadian genre painting. Reverse inscribed Quebec Habitant 1860. Housed in a gilt frame.
