A large patinated bronze work by the French artist Emile-Edmond Peynot (1850-1932), titled Le Marchand d’Armes (The Arms Merchant) or Marchand Tunisien (Tunisian Merchant). Created in 1883, the figure depicts a seated Arab man meticulously cleaning a flintlock pistol. It was a major commercial success for Peynot after being exhibited at the Paris Salon that same year. Signed Peynot 1883 on the base and include the title in Arabic script. Marked on back of base, E. Tasgel with Arabic script.
