Jeanne Mathilde Visart de Bury (Belgium-Canada, 1871 – 1950) oil on canvas after Cristofano Allori (1577 – 1621), Florence, Italy, titled Judith with the head of Holofernes, a renaissance depiction of the biblical story from the Book of Judith in the Mannerist style. Jeanne Visart de Bury was was born in Wollmatingen, Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany as the eldest daughter and child of Count Robert de Bury of the Belgian nobility and Lucy Simmonds of St. John, New Brunswick. though came to New Brunswick as a young child. She was a student at St. John Academy and Owen’s Art Institute in New Brunswick, and then studied in Florence and Rome, Italy where she received a Master’s of Arts in painting and design. She spent some time at a convent in Malta but ultimately returned to Canada in the late 1890’s where she took up painting. This work is said to have been completed in 1912, perhaps on a trip to Florence Italy. She died in Montreal, Quebec.
