Lot 438:
A Pre Columbian “Quimbaya” Anthropomorphic Covered Jar Quimbaya / Middle Cauca
Description
A Pre-Columbian Colombian covered ceramic vessel of anthropomorphic form, associated with the Quimbaya or broader Middle Cauca tradition. The rounded vessel body rises from a short circular foot and is surmounted by a removable domed head-lid with simplified facial features, pierced nostrils, incised hair, narrow eyes, and a small mouth. The torso is decorated with low-relief arms, an incised collar band, and a central chest ornament or textile motif. The surface retains a reddish terracotta slip with dark mineral mottling. The vessel belongs to a regional tradition of humanized ceramic containers likely made for funerary or ritual use, where the jar functions both as container and symbolic figure. 6 inches tall x 5 inches wide.
