Description

A double sided illuminated manuscript antiphonal leaf, a type of oversized sheet music used in medieval and early modern church services. These leaves were typically handcrafted by monks on vellum (prepared animal skin) and featured Gregorian chant written in square musical notation.

Purpose: These leaves were often part of a large book called an Antiphonary or Gradual. They were made very large so that an entire choir could read the words and music from a single stand.
Notation: The music is written in square notation on a four- or five-line staff. The presence of five lines, as seen in some similar examples, can sometimes suggest a later date, such as the 16th or 17th century.
Aesthetics: The manuscript features rubrication (red ink used for instructions or emphasis) and hand-painted illuminated initials.
Dimensions: Framed, measures 26 x 18.5 inches, sheet measures 23 inches H x 15.75 W.
