Antique Russian Orthodox Icon of a Saint, Repousse Brass Oklad, 19th C.
Description
Antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting St Nicholas, painted in tempera on a wooden panel and fitted with a repousse brass oklad (riza). Figure is shown frontal, blessing with his right hand and holding the Gospel in his left, his face and hands exposed through shaped apertures in the metal cover. The oklad is finely worked with incised geometric borders, radiating halo motifs, and stylized ecclesiastical ornament. The reverse reveals the original wooden panel construction with extensive age-related wear.
