Oil on canvas depicting a romantic wooded landscape opening onto a luminous valley and distant mountains. A solitary hunter in red attire traverses the foreground, providing narrative scale within a richly atmospheric composition.
The work demonstrates strong Barbizon influence, with layered glazing, warm tonal transitions, and dramatic framing trees guiding the viewer’s eye toward the illuminated middle ground.
Signed lower left Codman. The reverse bears an inscription referencing John Amory Codman and retains a brass plaque affixed to the frame with the artist’s name and dates (1860-1886). The canvas has been professionally relined at an earlier date.
