Lot 90:
Utagawa Kuniyasu ( Attrib.), Ueno Toeizan at Edo, Early 19th c. Ukiyo-e Woodblock
Description
An early Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a bijin figure accompanied by a child in the foreground, set before the temple buildings of Toeizan (Kan’ei-ji) at Ueno, one of Edo’s most important religious and cultural landmarks. The scene represents the area before the Kuromon (Black Gate), a well-known entrance to the temple complex, animated by pedestrians and architectural detail in the background.
The composition combines bijin-ga and meisho-e traditions, a hallmark of early 19th-century Utagawa-school production.
