Lot 53:
Yup’ik Inuit Polychrome Carved Wooden Mask Sculpture, 34 cm, Alaska
Description
Yup’ik Inuit Style Mask
Alaska (attributed)
Carved wood mask of elongated oval form, decorated in red, cream, and blue pigments with bold graphic facial elements. The stylized face features large circular eyes with radiating motifs, a prominent open mouth with carved teeth, and applied side elements suggestive of spirit appendages or limbs. A vertical crest element rises from the crown, reinforcing the mask’s sculptural presence.
The surface shows visible hand-carving and wear, with a warm patina throughout. The polychrome decoration emphasizes the mask’s expressive qualities and reflects traditional Arctic mask aesthetics reinterpreted in sculptural form.
Height: 34 cm
Condition:
Overall good condition with surface wear. Small repair at the crest (top of head) presently loosening and may require stabilization. No other major structural issues observed.
