Lot 51:
Large Inuit Soapstone Mother and Child Sculpture, Signed in Syllabics
Description
Large Inuit soapstone sculpture depicting a seated mother holding a child. The composition is carved in a strong, block-like form with rounded contours and simplified facial detailing characteristic of mid- to late-20th-century Arctic carving. The dark stone exhibits subtle speckling and a polished surface.
The underside is signed in syllabics and bears an incised inventory number. Faint traces of an old “Eskimo Art” paper label remain visible.
