Catalogue Note
Ceremonial vessel supports of this type were employed in royal and elite palace settings throughout the Grassfields region of Cameroon, where monumental ceramic vessels were used for the storage and presentation of palm wine, ritual substances, and other prestige goods. Elevated on iron harnesses, such vessels became focal points within courtly and ritual spaces, reinforcing hierarchy, authority, and ancestral continuity.
The present example demonstrates exceptional technical and symbolic sophistication. The forged iron framework provides structural strength, while the cast bronze appliqués—depicting stylized human masks, lions, and zoomorphic guardians—communicate royal power, protection, and lineage. In Grassfields societies, bronze was a material closely associated with kingship and court privilege, and its use here underscores the object’s elite function.
