Description

A striking Punu female spirit mask from southern Gabon, carved in fine oval form with an elaborate high coiffure, narrow almond-shaped eyes, and a softly modeled mouth. The surface retains traces of white kaolin, signifying ancestral purity and the spiritual realm, with the characteristic diamond scarification mark centered on the forehead.

The reverse shows age patina and interior wear, with original perforations around the edge used for costume attachment during dance ceremonies. Such masks, known as Mukudj or Okuyi, were worn by male dancers on stilts in rituals honoring deceased ancestors and ensuring community fertility and harmony.
Condition: Stable, with age wear, pigment loss, and minor fissures consistent with authentic field use.
Provenance: Private collection, Canada. Measuring approximately 12” x 7”.
