West African Bronze Currency Torque (Manilla), 9 in.
Description
A large cast bronze currency bracelet, or manilla, with a rounded body flaring into trumpet-shaped terminals, joined by curled finials. Rich dark patina with areas of wear showing lighter bronze beneath.
Diameter: approx. 9 in (23 cm).
Such forms were historically used as currency, dowry payments, and prestige objects among West African peoples, notably the Igbo (Nigeria) and Bamum/Bamileke (Cameroon). Large ceremonial manillas of this size were not worn but functioned as symbolic wealth and status indicators.
Condition: Surface wear, minor casting flaws, and patination consistent with age and use.
