Edo Japanese samurai very long katana signed by swordsmith Fuyuhiro. The swordsmith’s name Fuyuhiro lasted 17 generations from the Muromachi period to the Edo period (1460-1868). During Sengoku period (warring state period)Fuyuhiro forged swords for high-class samurai or feudal lords because of his popularity and the high demand for weapons. This blade was forged in the Edo period. (1603-1868). It is heavy, thick, with almost 30 inches (29.8 inches, or 76 cm) a very unusual length. There are no cracks, or scratches, only some blemishes. The Hamon, or temper line, is very nice, a small wave that runs the blade up to the kissaki. The koshirae is called Handachi, which means half tachi. This type of fitting was popular from the late Muromachi period to the early Edo period, and it means they are halfway between katana and tachi mounts. The koshirae is in very good to excellent condition, with only some scratches on the saya or scabbard. Signed, with no papers, comes with a silk bag.
A NBTHK certified tsuba with dragon openwork, called Nanban, comes with the katana. The term Nanban translates to ‘southern barbarian’, and these guards often features foreign motifs like dragons. The a Nanban style emerged after contact with the Europeans and other Asian cultures in the 16th century. Comes with silk bag and NBTHK certification for the tsuba. Sword in sheath measures 42”L, 30” blade.
